Dar James creates layered mixed-media paintings rooted in botanical forms, often trees and branching structures. She builds surfaces with acrylic paint, textured polymer mediums, and hand-painted or printed papers used as collage, then refines them with careful line work and pointillist detail.
Inspired by early childhood spent in parks along Lake Michigan and the many walks she now takes on rail trails in eastern Pennsylvania, Dar James studies the branching forms, plant structures, and shifting patterns of nature that quietly shape the compositions in her work.
I share my art studio with three surprisingly well-behaved cats—Charlie, Min, and Lilah—who have claimed an entire work table, complete with boxes, in the southern window for their daily sunbath. I’ve hung a bird feeder just outside the glass, which keeps them happily occupied while I work.
