Jennifer Domal

Mixed Media (3D)

My Process

I write traditional pysanky and contemporary batik art eggs using beeswax resist and dye on locally sourced eggshells. Artwork is created on real blown eggshells using quail and pheasant, robust chicken and duck, sturdy goose, up to exotic emu, stunning swan shells and majestic ostrich shells.

My Inspiration

Jennifer Domal grew up in a Polish-Lithuanian home that introduced her to writing pysanky. The iconic forms, use of line, repetition and pattern captivated her. Ancient cultures, history and mathematical forms will find their way into her art. The color and texture of the shell are and celebrated.

Fun Facts

Since I try to use regionally sourced beeswax and eggshells whenever possibly, I meet a lot of hobby farmers! Sometimes a patron will become a source and that becomes a lovely relationship. They choose the loveliest "canvases" for me to work and will tell me about the hens.
