My ceramic practice revolves around color and surface treatment. My pieces are saturated with bright, bold colors in unexpected combinations. I carve intricate, nature-inspired motifs into the surface, creating work that is both decorative and functional. I hope to spread joy through my creations.
I'm inspired by shapes found in nature as well as motifs seen in henna designs from around the world. I enjoy experimenting with colors and how they interact to affect the mood of my creations. Even after more than 40 years working with clay, I am still excited to open my kiln after every firing.
Because of the nature of my technique, there is no "do-over" if mistakes are made in carving. I simply have to adapt my design to camouflage mistakes. This has led to new designs that I occasionally like better than my original plan. In this way my designs are constantly evolving.
